An alternative derivation of the Lense-Thirring drag on the orbit of a test body

چکیده
— In the weak field and slow motion approximation of general relativity a new approach in deriving the secular Lense-Thirring effect on the orbital elements of a test body in the external field of different central rotating sources exhibiting axial symmetry is presented. The approach adopted in the present work, in the case of a perfectly spherical source, leads to the well known Lense-Thirring formulas for all the Keplerian orbital elements of the freely falling particle. The corrections induced in the case of a central nonspherical, axisymmetric body are also worked out.

An alternative derivation of the periodical and secular Lense-Thirring effect on the orbit of a test body
A new strategy in deriving the Lense-Thirring effect on the orbital elements of a test body in the field of a rotating mass is presented. The approach adopted in the present work leads, for all the Keplerian orbital elements, to more direct and easy calculation with respect to the original paper by Lense and Thirring. Both periodical and secular terms are worked out. While the latter ones resul...

متن کاملElementary derivation of the Lense-Thirring precession
An elementary pedagogical derivation of the Lense-Thirring precession is given based on the use of Hamilton vector. The Hamilton vector is an extra constant of motion of the Kepler/Coulomb problem related simply to the more popular Runge-Lenz vector. When a velocity-dependent Lorentzlike gravitomagnetic force is present, the Hamilton vector, as well as the canonical orbital momentum are no long...
متن کاملNew perspectives in testing the general relativistic Lense–Thirring effect
Testing the effects predicted by the General Theory of Relativity, in its linearized weak field and slow motion approximation, in the Solar System is difficult because they are very small. Among them the post-Newtonian gravitomagnetic Lense-Thirring effect, or dragging of the inertial frames, on the orbital motion of a test particle is very interesting and, up to now, there is not yet an undisp...
متن کاملA Gravitomagnetic Effect on the Orbit of a Test Body Due to the Earth’s Variable Angular Momentum
The well known general relativistic Lense-Thirring drag of the orbit of a test particle in the stationary field of a central slowly rotating body is generated, in the weak-field and slow-motion approximation of General Relativity, by a gravitomagnetic Lorentz-like acceleration in the equations of motion of the test particle. In it the gravitomagnetic field is due to the central body’s angular m...
